UK gets Yahoo’s mobile voice search for mobiles

Yahoo has launched its voice-enabled mobile search service for UK customers. The OneSearch service has been available to US customers since earlier this year, but today’s release is new to the UK.

Voice-enabled search means users can speak a search query into a handset. It requires a download and is currently available for certain BlackBerry devices, including the 8800 series, the Curve and the Pearl, as well as for Nokia Series 60 handsets.

ZDNet in the UK tried the new service out but was disappointed, saying that the voice-activated mode seemed “more tuned to the American accent than to British voices.” Yahoo promised that OneSearch will adapt over time.
