Match.com buys dating site People Media

IAC’s Match.com has acquired fellow dating site People Media from American Capital Ltd. for $80 million.

Match.com is the leading broad-based dating site in the United States with 5.8 million unique users in May while People Media is the leading operator of sites focused on specific demographic groups, operating 27 sites including BlackPeopleMeet.com, SingleParentMeet.com, SeniorPeopleMeet.com, BBPeopleMeet.com and LDSPlanet.com. The sites have a combined 255,000 paying subscribers and nearly 4 million uniques/month.

People Media earned $11.6 million in 2008 before depreciation and amortization, while Match.com reported $9.9 million in operating income. Match.com powers MSN online dating in the U.S. and other countries; People Media does the same for AOL Personals communities.
