Walmart exec: Give us quality not quantity
CHICAGO — Walmart corporate recruiter Sharon McCone has some advice for job-board operators: Deliver quality candidates not quantity.
McCone, who spoke during the 2009 Congress of the International Association of Employment Web Sites in early November, was among a number of recruiters to lament the difficulty of sorting through the sheer volume of candidates, many of whom simply are not qualified for the positions they seek.
At the OnRec Expo / Kennedy Recruiting Conference here the day before, several speakers relayed stories of people without law degrees applying to become a corporate attorney and people without medical degrees applying for a surgeon’s job.
Job boards need to help employers by finding ways to filter out unqualified candidates, McCone said. “What we really want are only qualified candidates, only candidates who are a culture fit, only candidates who are a career fit,” she said. Providing a way to screen candidates with qualifying questions would help, she said.
She also asked board operators to provide reliable links to information about their employer clients. “We need people to represent our brand as it really is,” she said.
McCone also said job boards need to make sure they can demonstrate that job candidates are coming from their sites and not others, even if it’s just encouraging candidates to remember where they first saw the job posted.
Lastly, McCone suggested that job boards do all they can to help job seekers design resumes to provide relevant information. It’s important for job boards to help seekers stay accountable and stay “fit” in their career searches, she said.
