Yet another GM sale falls through, this one for Saab
Swedish supercar maker Koenigsegg Group AB has terminated its agreement to buy the Saab brand from General Motors Co, Automotive News has just reported.
“We’re obviously very disappointed with the decision to pull out of the Saab purchase,” GM CEO Fritz Henderson said in a statement announcing Koenigsegg’s decision. “Given the sudden change in direction, we will take the next several days to assess the situation and will advise on the next steps next week.”
On Sept. 30, Penske Automotive Group backed out of its agreement to buy Saturn. Penske had planned to partner with Renault SA but Renault determined it wasn’t a money maker.
In addition to going back to the drawing board for these two makes, GM wants to sell Hummer, will wind down production of Pontiac, but has decided not to sell its majority stake in Opel in Europe. U.S. brands GM will retain are Chevy, Cadillac, GMC and Buick.
GM emerged from bankruptcy July 10, and AIM Group reported its plans to ramp up its advertising as another facet of its financial recovery.
