Miami Herald solicits donations from readers
Readers of The Miami Herald online now get an end-of-story message and link that asks them to donate to keep the presses running and the journalists reporting. The message: “Support ongoing news coverage at MiamiHerald.com, click here.” The landing page says, “Support the Miami Herald. Thank you for helping to make MiamiHerald.com South Florida’s most-read news destination on the Web. MiamiHerald.com features all the coverage of The Miami Herald’s award-winning print edition, plus breaking news and multimedia extras including video, audio, slideshows and searchable databases.
“If you value The Miami Herald’s local news reporting and investigations, but prefer the convenience of the Internet, please consider a voluntary payment for the Web news that matters to you.” Then follows a form for credit card billing information, with no suggested amount to donate.
Editor & Publisher columnist Steve Outing has blogged about the initiative, basically calling it a good idea done badly. We agree. Here are his suggestions.
There are so many crowdfunding products available and tools to help publishers make it easy for users to contribute, that this Miami wheel re-invention is not necessary or smart. One alternative is PayCheckr, which we profiled in CIR 10.18, Sept. 17. This crowdfunding tool is developed especially for media, with a motto of “keeping what’s read in the black.” A free product (at least for now), it’s definitely worth a try.
