An Apartments.com spokesperson just told us that in its hometown of Chicago, Ill. more than 100,000 people were homeless in 2011, and in the US 3.5 million are homeless. So, Apartments.com solicited nationwide participation and greater attention through its “Raising Awareness. Taking Action: A Campaign to Help End Homelessness” Facebook initiative.

As part of the campaign, Apartments.com promised to donate $1 to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless for every new “LIKE” it received on Facebook from November 1, 2011 – December 31, 2011. February 2 Apartments.com SVP and GM Kevin Doyle presented a check for $15,000 to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless.

“The relationship touched everyone involved especially the Coalition as they rely on donations and grants to serve the Chicago area,” the spokesperson told us by email.

Here’s the announcement:

APARTMENTS.COM DONATES $15,000

CHICAGO—(February 2, 2012) — Apartments.com presented a check for $15,000 to the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless yesterday at the culmination of their “Raising Awareness.

“In every aspect, this campaign was a huge success. We received overwhelming positive feedback from our Apartments.com staff and customers, as well as the general public,” said Kevin Doyle, senior vice president and general manager of Apartments.com. “We know $15,000, by itself, won’t bring an end to homelessness, but we hope it helps the Coalition to be able to continue the monumental good they do each and every day. It was an honor for our organization to be able to do our small part on behalf of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless this past holiday season.”

The Chicago-based advocacy group was selected as the beneficiary of this inaugural campaign as the leading voice for the homeless in the city of Chicago, where Apartments.com is headquartered. It was estimated that last year more than 100,000 people suffered from homelessness in Chicago1 and an estimated 3.5 million people each year experience homelessness2. Apartments.com designed the initiative to generate nationwide participation and help bring greater attention to this widespread issue across America.

“Chicago Coalition for the Homeless was founded over 30 years ago on one simple premise: that in a just society, housing is a human right. To that end, we work with families, youths and adults, advocating to better lives through access to shelter, housing, jobs and schools,” said Ed Shurna, executive director of the Chicago Coalition for the Homeless. “The staff of Apartments.com clearly knows the importance of housing and we are grateful to have their generous support.”

The Apartments.com campaign, “Raising Awareness. Taking Action: A Campaign to Help End Homelessness” aims to heighten visibility and bring in funds to benefit organizations that advocate for and serve the homeless. ”Like” the Apartments.com Facebook page for updates on next year’s “Raising Awareness. Taking Action: A Campaign to Help End Homelessness” initiative.

In a just-published study conducted by Nielsen for Cars.com, mobile car shoppers were found to be younger, affluent, and more likely looking for a new car, as compared with those in the US who car shopped by other means. Nielsen talked to 1600 shoppers, some of whom even used their smart phones right from the dealer’s lot.

“It’s no secret that mobile devices have completely changed the way consumers shop, making it crucial that retailers – automotive or otherwise – understand who mobile shoppers are and how they’re using their devices differently than their laptops or desktops,” said Sharon Knitter, Cars.com senior director, Mobile, in the announcement. “This study informs our ability to deliver a great car shopping experience to our users no matter what screen they’re visiting us on, as well as making us a better partner to our dealer customers and advertisers as they implement their own mobile marketing strategies.”

Report details:

Individuals 34 years of age or younger made up 40 percent of the respondents

Seventy-three percent were in the market for a new car

Nearly 80 percent had household income over $50,000

Most paid $20,000-$40,000 for their recently-purchased car; the average price was over $28,000

Of the 83 percent of respondents shopping by smartphone, most used apps. The 28 percent searching via tablets headed to websites to do so.

Fewer than 10 percent had a specific vehicle or dealership in mind when they started their digital shopping.

Contrary to what we might expect, 99 percent use their mobile devices to shop from home. The most popular activity is looking at photos. Nearly as many look for dealerships, while 51 percent read dealer reviews. Two thirds search listings.

“What hasn’t changed with the growth of mobile usage is the importance of mastering the basics of selling a car,” said Knitter. “Smart phone users are viewing photos, searching inventory, researching prices, looking up dealer contact information and reading reviews. That means that many issues, such as poor merchandising, incorrect contact information and customer complaints, can be amplified for the mobile shopper, sending them elsewhere.”

Superpages just announced its upgraded Yellow Pages by Superpages mobile app, which allows consumers to search both white and yellow pages via their Android device or IPhone. New features include a voice search, a quick-spin choice of 75 popular categories and a one-click call to the chosen business or individual contact. It will soon be accessible via IPad as well. Here’s the announcement:

Superpages.com Mobile App Redesign Brings Easier Navigation and Voice Search

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)– Superpages.com®, the local search expert, has released a complete redesign of its Superpages mobile application user-interface and search engine technology. The Yellow Pages by Superpages® app is easier to use than ever before with new single field auto-complete search, voice search and a category spinner. Consumers can search the Yellow or White Pages, find business information, maps, driving directions, consumer reviews, movie listings, and more.

“Spin it, Say it, Search it,” saidChris Folmar, director of mobile products atSuperMedia. “With the new features we’ve added, consumers can easily search and find information and insights on local businesses and retailers.”

With a flick of your finger, the new Superpages spinner will make quick work of browsing popular categories. The spinner is on the home page of the app and lets consumers spin to more than 75 popular Yellow Pages categories.

“The new Superpages app is a significant improvement over earlier versions,” saidGreg Sterling, senior analyst Opus Research. “It’s smarter, easier to use and the scroll wheel is kind of addictive.”

In addition to the spinner, consumers can also search by voice. No more typing when on the go, consumers can now say what they’re looking for and search results appear, ordered by distance to the current location. When typing is needed, the single field search with auto-complete will guess what consumers are looking for and help complete the entry faster.

The android version of the app launched in July and users are saying: “much easier to use” — “voice search is a nice addition” — “easy navigation” — “seems to add more relevancy to the searches” — “I like the spinning wheel.” To read more great reviews visit your app store.

The Yellow Pages by Superpages applications are available on the iPhone® or iPod® Touch, and Google Android platforms, and the Superpages Mobile Web site at m.superpages.com, is available to use on nearly all mobile phones. The app will also be available for iPad® in the coming months.

Other super features:

Search money-saving deals from local restaurants, auto repair shops, health and beauty services, home improvement contractors, hotels, and more.

Business Detail pages now have swipe-bar actions. Easily click-to-call, read or write reviews, save or email business info, view Web site, get maps and directions, or share onFacebook.

Get Directions and find your way: Get step-by-step interactive driving directions with an option to have multiple stops on the way to your destination.

GPS Assist Auto-location with Manual Override.

See your local five-day forecast with current conditions and access your My Superpages account to easily see your previous searches.

Find Movies Fast: Search by movie or theater and see show times, read reviews, or watch trailers.

Now smart phone and tablet tool provider Visionary Apps has signed with RealtyTrac to power the Visionary Apps Complete Foreclosures app available in its app store.

Here’s the recent news release:

Visionary Apps’ Complete Foreclosures App Now Exclusively Powered by RealtyTrac® Data

Single Property Record Purchase feature solidifies Complete Foreclosures as the leading provider of quality foreclosure data in the App Store

HARTLAND, Wis. – Visionary Apps LLC (www.visionaryapps.com), creators of innovative smart-phone and tablet tools that aim to improve people’s lives, today announced that its popular Complete Foreclosures application (app) for the iPhone and iPad is now exclusively powered by data from RealtyTrac® (http://www.realtytrac.com/), the leading online marketplace of foreclosure properties. One of the many new features is the RealtyTrac® Single Property Details Purchase feature which will allow Complete Foreclosures to offer full details on EVERY listing, whereas before some of the property listings only had partial details.

RealtyTrac data will allow the free Complete Foreclosures app to significantly increase its 25 data fields to up to 75 data fields, and instantly bring the best foreclosure data available for over 1.5 million default, auction and bank-owned and property records from over 2,200 United States counties.

When launched in February 2010, the Complete Foreclosures app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch was the first national foreclosures app and instantly rated as one of the top ten business apps on iTunes and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Forbes and Bloomberg News.

Complete Foreclosures understands the way homebuyers and investors search for properties, and so they developed a quick and easy way for consumers to access millions of foreclosed properties locally and nationwide. Easy customizable options allow users to filter out any properties that do not meet their needs. Custom sort options include price, square footage and number of bedrooms and bathrooms.

“Overall, the RealtyTrac® data and new features will help dramatically increase the user experience,” said Daniel Burrus, CEO and founder of Visionary Apps. “We’ve made it incredibly easy for users to find foreclosed properties that meet their needs. They simply tap their screen for detailed listing data or to be connected directly to a local real estate professional associated with the property who can answer their questions about the home or foreclosure buying process.”

Features of Complete Foreclosures:

Instantly search foreclosed listings locally and nationwide

Access licensed real estate foreclosure experts within a search area

Chad Dickerson, Etsy CTO since 2008, was just named CEO of the handmade marketplace. He promises extensive blogging to keep us all informed about upcoming changes at Etsy, but top of the list, he says, is improved search. Search sorted by relevancy is a just-added option for consumers, and Dickerson wrote that this has increased listing views, though he didn’t say by how much.

Each merchant on Etsy can view her or his following via the sites Shop Stats dashboard, where she’ll find statistics on views, revenue, orders and favorites. Shop Stats is a feature designed to help shop owners understand their business. Shop Stats includes a dashboard, with a few key metrics, and data on how people find your shop. The seller can choose to view data for Today, Yesterday, the Last 7 Days, the Last 30 Days, This Month, Last Month, This Year, Last Year, All Time, or specific dates.

Shop Stats also tells the seller where the buyers are coming from – i.e, the sites that brought them to Etsy (up to 12 top sites), the Etsy features and pages that delivered them to the merchant’s items, and the keywords used to find their products.

Dickerson and the other Etsy executives are clearly aware of the merchant disgruntlement at Etsy and are working to fix the problems in time for the upcoming holiday season, initiating a Seller Happiness Team that will focus on improving the merchant experience.

“I have spent a lot of time in the past week meeting with teams inside Etsy to better understand the reseller problem so we can be more effective in addressing it,” Dickerson wrote in the Etsy Blog. “…We’re attacking the problem by hiring knowledgeable staff and building better tools and we’ve made some progress — we’ve reviewed and taken action on more than six times the number of accounts as we did one year ago. We need to make more, though. As the old saying goes, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” so I’ll be focusing more of the company’s energy on understanding and addressing the core issues that lead to resellers being visible on Etsy. We’ll definitely continue to step up enforcement, but we’ll also be doing more work to address the root causes of the problem.”

Etsy has more than 800,000 sellers and 25 million monthly visitors.

Via Property Portal Watch workshop presentation (which we’ll be discussing soon in CIR) and our own conversation with Move, Inc. executives AIM Group learned that Realtor.com is going to launch global real estate listings by Thanksgiving of this year.

Jennifer DuBois, director of public relations at Move told us one aspect of the implementation is that investors from other countries interested in buying US property will now be able to search in their own languages.

Move, Inc. also recently purchased SocialBios.com, a small firm whose mission is to enable entrepreneurs, job candidates and others to find commonality with those with whom they’d like to do business. Exactly how and when Move will embrace its online social concepts and tools is not yet decided, but we know SocialBios founders will stay with the firm, and its headquarters will remain in Denver.

Realtor.com president Errol Samuelson talked at PPW about the acquisition, explaining that consumers would now be able to search for an agent with the same interests and perhaps background as they – someone who would “get” what they wanted in their new home.

“SocialBios is like speed dating,” DuBois told us. “It’s about making a quick connection, cutting through the clutter. When my husband and I looked for a house we found an agent who, like us, had young children. ‘You two go look at the house. I’ll watch your kids out here in the yard’” she’d tell me and my husband.”

That’s the kind of connection SocialBios will enable – agents and buyers or sellers who have a school or church or other lifestyle interest in common and might well relate more effectively than those who do not.

Details of Realtor.com’s global listings launch are still being worked out.
