Egypt bans GPS on iPhone

Maps on mobile phones are becoming an essential part of next generation cellular devices. They’re an important way for everyone from local pizza joints to Realtors to get the word out about their offerings. Apple’s new 3G iPhone has made GPS a key selling point.

Just don’t try it in Egypt. The Cairo government has demanded that Apple disable the phone’s global-positioning system, arguing that GPS could allow terrorists to target military and other sensitive facilities.

Apple has apparently complied, according to The New York Times.

It’s not the first time Egypt has shut down new technology in order to keep better control over its citizens. A movement for political reform that used Facebook to organize protests over the spring was shut down and many of its organizers were jailed. Bloggers who present contrarian point of view have been jailed.

The mapping controversy is perhaps a tempest in a teapot. Google Maps is already available in the country and can pinpoint the same sensitive locations.

Sensis working with Google – and the world keep turning

There is no excerpt because this is a protected post.

Hookups have never been this easy…or creepy

Just launched: a new relationships Web site that mashes up Craigslist personals with Google Maps to show you exactly where you can find people who want to “hook up” in your local area.

The service, dubbed HookupMaps.com (remember that very first Google Maps/Craigslist mashup – HousingMaps.com?), opens with a disclaimer: “This site may contain explicit content not suitable for people under 18 years of age.”

That certainly seems accurate. If you know the “casual encouters” section on Craigslist, they range from enticing to erotic – emphasis on the latter. But if the goal is to help people find hook up relationships close to home or work, the service may actually be useful.

HookupMaps.com has a simple interface – a Google Map with little hearts and numbers indicating how many potential hook ups there are in a particular area. The service covers New York, Washington D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego. In San Francisco alone there are 1000s of listings.

Clicking a heart opens a text list to the right of the map with all the corresponding Craigslist personal ads, displayed 50 to a page. There are filters – m4w, m4m, w4m, w4w – and users can search by neighborhood or keyword.

San Francisco computer engineer Josh Liptzin is behind the site. He says he coded it to put a fresh face on Craiglist’s stark design which he called “so 1996.” In the last week, the site has had an impressive 10,000 unique visitors, Liptzin said.

HookupMaps is more of a gimmick than a serious revenue-generating site. And, like mashups before it that involved Craigslist, it’s likely to get taken down (probably sooner than later now that we’ve written about it here!) In the meantime, we think it’s pretty clear that larger sites like Match.com have little to fear.

Google adds text ads to Google Maps

Google is adding text ads to its popular Google Maps product. A search for “New York City Hotels” now displays a single line below with text ads for the Crowne Plaza Times Square and the Ramada New York (you can cycle through ads by clicking an arrow just as you do in Google’s Gmail app).

All ads are for local businesses and are triggered by the search terms though it’s not clear whether Google has turned on geographic targeting. For example, a search for “shoe store San Francisco” generated a single text ad that didn’t change when we zoomed in on a specific neighborhood. Still, we’re sure it’s only a matter of time before Google switches it on. The possibilities for mobie Google Maps (working on both the iPhone and new Android G1) are tantalizing.

The ads do not display the business’s locations on the map itself, rather – in keeping with Google Ads elsewhere on the Web – they open the business’s Web site. That makes sense: it’s a logical (and relatively simple to implement) extension of Google’s existing AdWords program to work on Google Maps. But we’d like to see interactive push pins too.

Google Maps are immensely popular. ComScore reported 131 million unique visitors worldwide in August for a whopping 1.3 billion page views.

Given Google’s recent moves to monetize its YouTube product (see our articles here and here), adding AdSense to Flash games, and the steep drop in its stock price, the company is clearly looking to reassure investors that it’s on top of its revenue game.
