Google+ takes on Facebook

Google is testing a rollout of its new social service, “Google+” – according to Mashable — which will add social elements to just about everything you do on Google.

It’s something Google should be doing, of course, but is there really room for another Facebook?  Hmm. Ask MySpace and Yahoo about that. However, if anyone can poke a hole in Facebook’s balloon, it’d be Google, we suppose.

The screenshots sort of remind us of Orkut, Google’s first social network.

The plus sign “+” is unfortunate branding, IMHO. I’ve been typing for 40 years and I still have to stop and look for the dang key, which never seems to be in the same place from keyboard to keyboard, and I have no idea where it is on my phone.

Google Maps dropping real estate listings

Well…. It seemed like a no-brainer when Google began pinpointing real estate listings on Google Maps. It could have even been a game-changer.

But Google is pulling the plug — pulling the pins, as it were — because the effort didn’t get the traction the search giant had expected.

“In part due to low usage, the proliferation of excellent property-search tools on real estate websites, and the infrastructure challenge posed by the impending retirement of the Google Base API, we’ve decided to discontinue the real estate feature within Google Maps on February 10, 2011,” the company said in a blog post.

Google taps VP to lead geo-local services

Signaling its emphasis on the importance of geo-local services, Google tapped one of its VPs to focus exclusively on it as a business line — and appointed her to the company’s operating board.

Geo-local services had been the shared domain and just one of the duties of VP of search Products and user experience Marissa Mayer. It’s now hers alone. Putting her on the operating board makes geo-local one of Google’s pillars.
