Within days of each other Daft.ie and MyHome.ie have announced Local Property Tax calculators to help potential home buyers calculate the market value of properties and their tax liability based on factors including the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. The move is partly in response to widely voiced criticisms of the government’s own Revenue.ie calculator but also seems to be the latest round in a squaring up between the two leading property portals in the region.

It’s a face off that has already seen Myhome.ie pull its latest advertising campaign after Daft.ie reported it.

The campaign had the slogan “With more Dublin homes sold than any other property website” and angered Daft.ie which protested to the Advertising Advertising Standards Authority for Ireland saying that the claim could not be substantiated. Myhome.ie was forced to withdraw the ads.
What’s at stake is the title of ‘Dublin’s number one property portal’ and it will be interesting to see if the recent activity is just the normal friction in a shared market or a jockeying for the definitive position as the market gets tighter.

Press release: Schibsted acquires majority in leading Irish online classifieds site

Schibsted Media Group has agreed to acquire 50.09 per cent of DoneDeal.ie, the leading online classifieds site for cars and generalist in the private market in Ireland.

DoneDeal.ie had revenues of around EUR 2 million in the first half of 2011. This was a growth of approx 70 per cent year over year. The company has positive EBITDA.

Schibsted has a right to increase the ownership up to 90.1 per cent in two years and up to 100 per cent in five years. This will be done at market valuation.

DoneDeal.ie fits well in among Schibsted Classified Media’s operations in established phase. The site has many similarities with the Blocket concept, and is a clear market leader within generalist and cars for privates. DoneDeal.ie is the third most visited online site in Ireland (source: DoubleClick AdPlanner), and has a strong brand in the country. DoneDeal.it has a listing fee of EUR 3 per advertisement.

DoneDeal.ie was established in June 2005. The founders are Fred and Geraldine Karlsson. Fred Karlsson will continue in the management of the company and as a shareholder.

- We are very happy to include DoneDeal.ie into the family of online classifieds sited in Schibsted. A strong number one position and good profitability means that Ireland will be our fifth country with online classifieds sites in established phase. The acquisition will be another contributor to continued good profitable growth for online classifieds in Schibsted, Terje Seljeseth CEO of Schibsted Classified Media says.

The rapid growth in video penetration online is well documented and the demand for more and more targeted video is expected to continue to grow from both online readers and advertisers in 2011.

Independent Digital is embracing this trend and is launching a ‘best in class’ Online Video Management System (VMS) for users, and expects this sector of display advertising within the market to grow significantly.

Loyal users on Independent.ie will benefit from this new technology with a “Video Carousel” on the Home Page of Independent.ie that presents the latest video to users in a fast moving and engaging fashion. In addition a list of ‘Most Viewed’ and ‘Most Emailed’ videos are presented to users by section. To further enhance the experience for our users we will be rolling out a Video Sharing facility so that our users can quickly and easily share video with their favourite social networking site.

In addition to a dedicated video channel on www.independent.ie/video every section across Independent.ie has its own topic specific video channel where current news stories are enhanced by accompanying video which can be viewed by a user which greatly enhances the users experience on the website.

A unique feature to Independent.ie is that the new Video Management System uses technology that allows videos to be played and viewed across our mobile, iPhone, iPad apps and products. “Making sure we delivered a really great video solution on all platforms especially iPhone and iPad was a key goal for us” commented Ian Byrne, CEO, Independent Digital. “At the moment a lot of the mass market video solutions simply do not work on the Apple platform which is a big disappointment for readers and advertisers.”

In addition to delivering an excellent experience for users and advertisers, this innovation now enables the Independent Digital Sales team to offer advertisers/brand managers the ability to target their video advertising campaign by audience profile (e.g. female audience researching home insurance renewal), to particular content sections across Independent.ie (e.g. Business) or to a particular video player, in a wide variety of pre-mid and post roll advertisements. In another first to market for Independent Digital new video advertising formats including Text Ads, MPU’s and Leaderboards will be offered to advertisers.

The video advertising solution complies with the latest IAB Video Advertising standards (VAST) just released from the UK.
