San Antonio paper, broadcaster to dissolve MySA.com partnership

Hearst-owned San Antonio Express-News and Belo-owned KENS-TV are dissolving their nine-year partnership in MySanAntonio.com (a.k.a. MySA.com). The dissolution will occur in January, both companies said. The Express-News gets custody of the MySA.com brand and KENS-TV will launch its own site, KENS5.com.

The companies told respective staffs Thursday afternoon.

“It’s been a great partnership over the years, and the Web audience and business we’ve jointly built is a reflection of our combined strengths,” said Tom Stephenson, Express-News president and publisher, “but as our businesses change and our respective Internet presence expands, it makes more sense for both partners to operate independent sites.”

He described the parting as amicable, adding that the two companies intend to continue collaborating on marketing and news initiatives. Robert McGann, president and GM of KENS-TV, echoed Stephenson’s sentiments, and added that the station is planning to launch several niche sites, including classifieds products.

MySA.com ranks the No. 1 local news portal in San Antonio, and third nationally in local-market penetration, behind WashingtonPost.com and Austin360.com, run by the Austin American-Statesman.

Stephenson and McGann said the future of staff members who work directly for mySA.com hasn’t been determined and will be worked out during the next three months.
