Qype aims to be Yelp for Europe…and beyond
A Yelp-like local reviews site clone called Qype has been growing aggressively in Europe and has designs on other continents including South America. Will the U.S. be next?
Qype, a German startup, has a strong presence in England, France and Spain in addition to its home country. A Brazilian site was recently launched. The company’s traffic is good: 6.3 million unique visitors a month across its network, says the company’s CEO Stephan Uhrenbacher.
Qype doesn’t have any immediate plans to hit North America. Its main competitive differentiation from Yelp is its multi-lingual capabilities which suggest there’s lots of room to grow without taking on Yelp directly.
Qype is planning to launch an iPhone-enabled app later this month; Yelp already has that running.
Qype has a decent sized war chest. The company closed an €8 million round in September, and has raised €13m to date.

UK gets Yahoo’s mobile voice search for mobiles
Yahoo has launched its voice-enabled mobile search service for UK customers. The OneSearch service has been available to US customers since earlier this year, but today’s release is new to the UK.
Voice-enabled search means users can speak a search query into a handset. It requires a download and is currently available for certain BlackBerry devices, including the 8800 series, the Curve and the Pearl, as well as for Nokia Series 60 handsets.
ZDNet in the UK tried the new service out but was disappointed, saying that the voice-activated mode seemed “more tuned to the American accent than to British voices.” Yahoo promised that OneSearch will adapt over time.

Property Web site Rightmove cuts 20% of staff
Rightmove, the biggest property Web site in the U.K., will cut the workforce by 20 percent, making 60 people redundant, as the housing market in the UK continues to slow. According to Rightmove, these are “the first redundancies that the company has made as a result of the downturn in the UK housing market.” The planned cost reductions will result in savings of around 5 million pounds ($7.8 million).
In addition to these staff cuts Rightmove, which advertises around 90 percent of homes for sale in the U.K., will also cut back the Rightmove Overseas business because of decreased demand for property in continental Europe.
