Eighteen percent of American adults hope to buy a home this year, taking advantage of the U.S. government’s new housing tax credits, according to Move Inc.

Move commissioned a survey of 1,005 adults conducted earlier this month. The survey also found that 23 percent were planning to buy a home in the next five years. More than half of that group would be first-time home-buyers.

The government is offering an $8,000 tax credit toward the purchase of a new home, as part of a $787 billion economic stimulus bill. Jump-starting the real estate industry is seen as a key component to economic recovery. Nothing wrong with jump-starting the real estate advertising industry as well.

The 18% response is encouraging, especially in light that more than half of all Americans say they fear facing foreclosure within the next six to 12 months.
