REA Group has announced that its flagship Web site, RealEstate.com.au, has entered into a new five-year data and content licensing agreement with RP Data. The new deal supersedes arrangements currently in place between the two companies, which were set to expire in June 2009.

RealEstate.com.au licenses property data to RP Data, which in turn sells property reports through the RealEstate.com.au Web site.

There was a sentiment that RP Data might use its unique position to acquire a property portal of its own in order to compete against RealEstate.com.au and Domain. As former REA Group CEO, Simon Baker, said, “The new site could seamlessly integrate property data and listings to provide customers with a single source of information on what is for sale, projected housing prices, and even neighborhood information.”

But for the moment, RP Data and REA Group insist they will be collaborators rather than competitors.

After executing the new deal REA Group Limited CEO Greg Ellis, said, “We are excited about entering this new phase of our strategic alliance with RP Data and look forward to strengthening our relationship with them. Both parties see great benefits flowing through to the Australian property market from the new alliance.”
