RealEstate.com.au, Australia’s most-used property portal, has launched a new mobile site in beta: m.realestate.com.au. It’s an upgrade from its initial mobile effort, launched in 2003.

The new site features social networking enhancements such as MySpace and “e-mail a friend” capabilities, allowing buyers and renters to share short-listed properties with family and friends.

RealEstate.com.au’s official statement said the idea for the site was “born out of a need to provide property seekers across Australia with the ability to access thousands of listings across the buy, rent and share tabs, particularly for those who are time poor or away from their computers.”

CEO Greg Ellis said a mobile Web site is one of many emerging technologies the company is currently working on and that it represented a huge growth market in terms of connecting with potential users. Mobile phones have a market penetration rate of close to 100 percent in Australia.

“RealEstate.com.au has identified that property-seekers interested in using this type of technology have already done the majority of their research online and are in the advanced stages of the purchasing cycle,” he said.
