Australian employment classifieds site CareerOne has teamed up with Brisbane City Council to provide job listings on its Web site,, which sells itself as a “Brisbane-based lifestyle and tourism Web site that covers all aspects of living in and visiting the city,” receives more than 500,000 unique browsers a month.

CareerOne, started by News Ltd back in 1999, is Australia’s second-largest classifieds provider. News Ltd recently sold a 50 percent stake in the company to global classifieds giant Monster in the hope that Monster’s technology could combine with its contacts book to rope in the runway market leader in the region, Seek.

With its sub-tropical climate and open spaces, Brisbane, state capital of Queensland, is Australia’s third-largest city. Much like the cities of the “sunbelt” in the south of the United States, it is currently the epicenter of a population shift from the traditional (but more temperate) cities of the east coast. That part of Australia area is growing so rapidly that forecasters believe that Queensland will replace Victoria as Australia’s second-most populous state sometime around 2030.

News Ltd already dominates the city’s press, producing the only Brisbane-specific major daily newspaper, The Courier Mail.  By further cementing its place in the city’s job classifieds market – and teaming up what is essentially a lifestyle site – it clearly has one eye on the future.
