Campanda raises money from Michelin, Ringier
16 Jan 2017
Campanda, the Berlin-based platform for recreational-vehicle (RV) rentals, announced (here in German) the completion of a Series B funding round – its largest to date – of €10 million ($10.6 million U.S.) from eight investors.
The investment was led by Michelin Travel Partners, a subsidiary of the tire company Michelin, which is also a first-time investor in Campanda.
Other investors included Ringier Digital Ventures and B-to-V Partners. Both also participated in the last funding round, that was announced in May 2015, and which totaled €5 million ($5.3 million U.S.).
Campanda founder and CEO Chris Moeller said (in a news release) the fresh money will finance the site’s expansion into new markets, increase its vehicle inventory, and support the growth of the team of 45 employees in three locations.
Also noteworthy was the announcement last week (here in German) that German firm Rental Alliance GmbH, operator of RV rental sites McRent.de and Rent-easy.de, had acquired a majority holding of BestTimerv.com, a Las Vegas-based site.
Details of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition is part of its worldwide expansion, the company stated in a news release.
McRent.de claims to be Europe’s largest RV rental platform, listing 2,500 vehicles in 70 locations.
According to its website, Campanda now lists over 26,000 RVs (such as campers, motorhomes, motor trailers) in 42 countries and over 900 cities, making it the largest worldwide. The majority of its listings are from commercial RV rental firms with which it has agreements, but since last year private RV owners have also been able to list their RVs.
A year ago, Campanda acquired 100 percent of French competitor Airvy, to benefit from the company’s peer-to-peer model, which it has now rolled out itself. It enables private owners to list their RVs. Airvy.fr continues to operate as an independent brand, focusing only on the French market.
