The announcement came hot on the heels of yesterday’s news that Henry Ruiz had been promoted to interim chief executive of the group’s business in Asia.

Cooney’s appointment will see him join the group’s executive leadership team, reporting directly to REA Group chief executive Tracey Fellows.

Fellows said the role was created to support the group’s expanding global footprint, particularly as it moves into property-related services.

“Over the years, has grown to become a much-loved brand among people looking to sell, rent or buy their home. There’s a tremendous opportunity to build on that brand in sectors that represent a natural extension of what we do well,” Fellows said.

“We are excited by what Kieren can offer the business with his world-class experience. He will drive our global marketing strategy.”

Cooney had been with the Omnicom Group since 2014, when he joined as the managing director of DDB Group Australia, before taking up his position as chief executive of Interbrand Australia in 2015.

Prior to that, he held chief marketing officer roles at NBN Co., Telecom New Zealand and Leading Edge Group.

Cooney’s appointment has also resulted in Elizabeth Minogue’s position at the company being re-aligned to executive general manager of media, with the task to concentrate on growing the group’s new lifestyle content platform “from a global perspective” .

Cooney will take up his role in the coming months.
