Schibsted Spain appoints new managing director

According to a company news release, De Nicolás will step into the role at the end of summer, taking over from David Manchón, Schibsted Spain’s commercial director. Manchón has been acting as “internal CEO” since former CEO Frode Nordseth left to become the head of operations for Schibsted Product and Technology in March 2017.

De Nicolás‘s appointment is the “culmination of a change of strategy” that began with Nordseth’s move. He is charged with reinforcing the group’s leadership position in the Spanish classified market, driving innovation and ensuring operational excellence.

The new managing director has a degree in business administration from the Autonomous University of Madrid, and an MBA from INSEAD. He began his professional career as a project director at Impact Media Group. De Nicolás then went to EBay U.K., where he was senior manager of the technology and consumer electronics category, before moving to become senior manager of its top customer engagement program.

He next moved to PayPal, where he was a key accounts relationship manager – first for the U.K., then for Europe. Then, he was promoted to general manager for PayPal in Spain and Portugal. His most recent role was general manager of StubHub International.

According to his LinkedIn profile (view here) he is also a board member of, a “collaborative economy app” that helps mothers find childcare, and is listed as “advisory board member, mentor and investor” of Made In Mobile, which bills itself the “No. 1 Spanish agency for the internet of things”.

This mix of experience explains why De Nicolás appealed to Schibsted. He has worked in classifieds, both developing verticals and managing customer experience; he has an inside view of digital payment entities such as PayPal; he is active in start-ups and peer-to-peer platforms, and he is accustomed to top-level international management.

The challenge for De Nicolás will be to drive change within the Spanish market, which has long been Schibsted’s goal. It has a commanding combined presence in the market, and a dominant position in stuff sites thanks to the powerhouse that is Milanuncios.

In January 2017, Schibsted purchased top Catalan real estate site (read our report here). It will fall on the new leader to ensure the company gains maximum benefit from the slow, but steady recovery of the property market.

Announcing his appointment, Schibsted Spain praised De Nicolás as an “experimental and strategic director, with a great capacity for leadership, [who is] closely aligned to the values of the company”. He will have tremendous opportunity, and responsibility, to demonstrate these skills.
