Careers24 adds 8,000 Udemy training courses in SA

Careers24, owned by Naspers subsidiary Media24, is South Africa’s biggest jobs site, as measured by audience stats site SimilarWeb (another Naspers company), with an average of 2.6 million visits per month by 1.2 million unique visitors per month (on average) in the 3-month period July, August and September. The site’s closest rival, Pnet.co.za saw an average of 1 million unique visitors per month in the same 3-month period. (Note: App usage is excluded.)
Udemy is a Naspers venture offering 40,000 online, on-demand courses to students around the world. In June 2016, Naspers invested $60 million U.S. in the start-up to help it expand its global reach.
Considering Careers24’s existing educational offerings (here) and Udemy’s desire to expand its footprint, a partnership seemed inevitable.
In fact, the AIM Group reported in September 2016 that Careers24 were looking for more education partners. At the time, it was linked to the University of Cape Town’s GetSmarter program and Educate24. At the time, Marc Privett, then Careers24 general manager, alluded to a partnership with Udemy, and the deal was sealed one month later in October 2016.
According to Shannon Hughes, Udemy corporate marketing VP, Careers24 currently offers 8,000 Udemy courses on its site. (Probably the 8,081 new courses referred to here – editor.) “Udemy courses are also featured in Careers24 user emails and on-site merchandising.”
Careers24 is an affiliate partner of Udemy. So, when a user is interested in purchasing a course through the recruitment platform, he is redirected to the Udemy website to complete the transaction.
Hughes said both companies are committed to helping job seekers advance in their careers. “The Careers24 team identified a selection of courses best suited for the South African market.”
Explaining why they’ve partnered with recruitment sites, Hughes said: “Job seekers are often looking to build new skills and strengthen existing ones as they consider next steps in their careers. As job seekers consider and apply for new jobs, relevant courses can be shared with them to grow their skills.”
When asked if more partnerships are likely, Hughes said Udemy is committed to expanding access to its content.
Only Educate24 and Udemy are now listed as course providers on the Careers24 website, but a Google search for the terms “GetSmarter and Careers24” will still bring up GetSmarter courses on the Careers24 website.
The 8,001 Udemy courses listed on Careers24 range from content marketing to forex trading strategy. Courses are priced between $20 U.S. and $200 U.S., but offer users free registration and lifetime access to course material.
Educate24 offers 80 courses, aimed at less technical professions. Between more life-skills-related courses, such as practical stress management, there are more practical ones for domestic workers, restaurant staff, and factory workers. These courses are six weeks long and cost around R800 ($56 U.S) each.
