EBay Classifieds Group (ECG), the segment that oversees 11 classified brands worldwide, created a vertical, called EBay Classifieds Group Motors. The company hasn’t announced it officially, but it’s hiring key positions for the new brand. Job ads have appeared on LinkedIn and the ECG site in the last week.

“The newly founded eCG Motors vertical operates from our offices in Amsterdam, Berlin-Friedrichshain and Dreilinden near Potsdam,” explains an ad on LinkedIn for a senior backend engineer in Berlin.

Another posting for a b-to-b sales and marketing director in Amsterdam states:  “Reflecting the increased focus on Motors within the group, we are establishing a global Motors organization and, as part of that, creating a global Motors center of excellence.”

It’s hard to predict what this new vertical will look like, and how it will differ from or complement the auto sites ECG operates in Germany (Mobile.de) and Denmark (Bilbasen).

Our best bet is that it will be taking on car-sharing technology.

It’s clear the traditional model of auto ownership is changing in favor of sharing and on-demand ride-hailing. It is why the major auto manufacturers are getting in on the game — BMW with DriveNow, Daimler with Car2go, GM with Maven, PSA Groupe (Peugeot, Citroen etc.) with Free2Move. And auto classifieds sites, whose business models turn on ownership, will need to do the same.
