Shopee ranks first among Southeast Asia’s e-commerce sites based on traffic and second based on active users. This is according to IPrice Group‘s recently released Map of e-commerce for Q1 2019.

Shopee rose to No.1 with 184.4 million visits a month, overtaking Alibaba-backed Lazada which saw 179.7 million monthly visitors. Shoppee saw a huge increase in visitors from Thailand and Indonesia, while Lazada saw a 12 percent decline in traffic.

Despite only serving one market, Indonesia’s Tokopedia and Bukalapak followed closely behind Lazada, and Vietnam’s Tiki came in fifth place, based on traffic.

The results were different when based on monthly active users (MAU) — a somewhat more meaningful metric. Lazada holds dominance in the region with the highest MAU, Shopee came in second, followed by Tokopedia.

Founded by Sea Group in 2015, Singapore-based Shopee started off as a c-to-c marketplace. It’s since evolved into a c-to-c and b-to-c (Shopee Mall) hybrid model.

The company has expanded into the Greater Southeast Asia region and even Taiwan over the last four years.
