Egypt-based online meal marketplace Elmenus has secured an investment from ex-VP of DeliveryHero, Julian Dames. The undisclosed capital injection is part of the company’s Series B round and will Dames join its board of advisors.

Dames was the co-founder of Rocket Internet-backed, on-demand food delivery service Foodora before serving as the VP for international markets at DeliveryHero. Elmenus founder Amir Allam believes this experience will help the company accelerate its growth.

Founded in 2011, Elmenus began as a food discovery platform that allowed users to find food from restaurants based on locations. After raising $1.5 million in Series A funding from Algebra Ventures, the start-up scaled into an online food ordering platform charging commissions from restaurants for every sale recorded via its platform. Elmenus claims to have more than 6,000 restaurants and more than 1 million users on its platform.

Commenting on his decision to invest in the start-up, Julian Dames said the business’ delivery order numbers have been quite impressive.

“As a native Egyptian player with well-established positioning as the consumer’s go-to platform, and with strong ties in the restaurant sector, Elmenus will be able to focus on features that are relevant for the Egyptian user (from consumer to delivery rider to restaurants); which may prove advantageous against the global competitors,” Dames said.
