OList, the Nigeria-based general classifieds site owned by Opera, has hired Gbenro Dara as managing director.

Dara (LinkedIn profile) is tasked with developing OList into a leading classifieds company in a market dominated by Jiji, which acquired OLX’s operations in five African countries earlier this year.

“We know this will come with its challenges similar to those experienced by other players. However, we are excited by our progress so far,” Dara told the AIM Group in an email. “My immediate focus will be to ensure we are able to sustain this listings momentum and drive consumer awareness about our brand and offerings.”

Before joining OList, Dara served as country manager at Roam-owned auto vertical Cheki.com.ng. Dara has also held executive positions at hotel booking site Hotels.ng, and Efritin, a now-defunct classifieds site.

Nigeria is a difficult market for classifieds sites — despite investing millions of dollars, both Naspers-backed OLX and Saltside Technologies’ Efritin, have exited Nigeria in recent years, citing poor chances of future profitability.
