Shannon Fitzpatrick

Gumtree Australia has appointed former Domain executive, Shannon Fitzpatrick, to lead its programmatic strategy as head of advertising.

Fitzpatrick (LinkedIn profile) spent five years at Domain, most recently as its director of programmatic and ad technology. He previously held positions at News Corp, Bauer Media and Fairfax.

“At a time when Australians are turning to ecommerce, Shannon will bring fresh thinking and new strategies to take advantage of these trends for our clients,” Gumtree Australia MD Mark Kehoe said, according to Mumbrella.

Fitzpatrick’s appointment comes shortly after Gumtree Australia was acquired by Adevinta last week, along with other EBay Classifieds Group assets.

While Gumtree is the dominant horizontal in Australia, the site has had trouble generating revenue. This March, the site closed a rumored A$80 million acquisition of automotive sites AutoTrader and CarsGuide from Cox Automotive Australia.

The acquisition is expected to help Gumtree generate more revenue from dealer listings and become a stronger competitor to Carsales. In a submission to the competition regulator, Gumtree said it also faced substantial competition from Facebook Marketplace, which it said had become a dominant player in private advertiser listings.
