Upwork (NASDAQ: UPWK), a freelance marketplace, has named former EBay executive Sam Bright as chief product and experience officer.
Bright (LinkedIn profile), has over 16 years experience in the tech industry. He spent the last eight years at EBay, working up from senior manager of marketplace mergers and acquisitions to vice president and general manager of verticals.
At EBay, Bright executed more than 70 partnerships across b-to-c, c-to-c, product, marketing, verticals, and shipping domains, and spent time on the company’s mergers and acquisitions strategy team.
Before EBay, Bright was an entrepreneurship mentor at Draper University and an associate in Merrill Lynch’s tech M-and-A division.
“Sam is an innovative, bold, and visionary leader who will make a major impact on how we help our customers unlock their potential and discover the truly transformational new way of working that is only available through the Upwork marketplace,” said Hayden Brown, president and CEO of Upwork.
Bright holds an M.B.A. from Harvard and a B.A. in management from Taylor University. He’s been named to Black Enterprise’s 2018 List of the Most Influential Blacks in Technology and The Network Journal’s 2018 40 Under Forty class.
Upwork connects independent contractors with gig work in a variety of fields, including web development, social media marketing, content writing and graphic design. The company says it serves 139,000 employers across 180 countries.
The company reported Q3 revenue of $96.7 million, up 24% year on year. It had a net loss of $2.7 million compared to a loss of $3.5 million.
