German media giant Axel Springer has appointed Peter Würtenberger as the company’s new executive vice president, a role that focusses on overseeing Springer’s global and strategic partnerships.
Würtenberger, the current CEO of upday news service, will assume his position on Aug. 1 that also includes the strategic management of Axel Springer’s international sales unit. He will also become president of the advisory board at upday.
“We are seeing excellent growth potential in the area of global partnerships. Everyone involved profits from strategic cooperations, especially our users,” said Mathias Döpfner, CEO Axel Springer. “The last few months have once again shown that Peter Würtenberger with his strong digital expertise is ideally suited to oversee and expand on our strategic cooperation with partner companies throughout the group.”
Axel Springer is active in more than 40 markets and while the group is known for its journalism brands, it also operates a number of classifieds marketplaces, mainly in real estate and recruitment. The company dominates several European markets including Germany and the U.K. through its e-recruiting brand StepStone Group.
Axel Springer has streamlined its marketplaces divisions in recent years with its subsidiary, Aviv Group, focussing on real estate, automotive and general digital classifieds. The group runs businesses such as Immowelt in Germany, Immoweb in Belgium, SeLoger in France and Yad2 in Israel.
“Technological innovations provide us with excellent chances in both journalism and classifieds to tailor content even better to individual needs and user habits,” said Würtenberger. “I am certain that the global strategic focus on partnerships in the form of better products and services for our users will pay off and at the same time make our brands even stronger worldwide.”
