Upwork, the freelancer marketplace targeted at creatives, has appointed Saty Bahadur as its new chief technology officer.

Bahadur joins the platform from Amazon, where he served as a general manager for four years. In his most recent role, he headed up the team responsible for preventing worldwide fraud and abuse on the e-commerce site.

Prior to that, the executive ran the Alexa artificial intelligence group and built the platform on which Alexa runs.

Before entering the marketplace sector, Bahadur spent a decade at software giant Microsoft, and worked as engineer and manager at Intel. Upwork said its new CTO had “spent the majority of his career on the cusp of significant computing technology paradigm shifts”.

Announcing the appointment, Upwork president and CEO Hayden Brown said, “Clear technology strategy and flawless engineering execution will continue to underpin Upwork’s ability to capitalize on the phenomenal market opportunity in front of us. Saty’s technical prowess, experience across platforms and established track record of building industry-leading engineering teams will accelerate Upwork’s delivery of technology and experiences for customers that change the way work gets done.”

Bahadur added, “I’m beyond thrilled to join, lead and grow the already talented engineering organization behind the world’s work marketplace. The success of our customers and, ultimately, our success as a business will be built on a sound technical foundation that allows us to rapidly scale, innovate and empower independent talent and businesses alike in unlocking the hybrid workforce.”

California-based Upwork describes itself as “the world’s largest work marketplace”, as measured by gross services volume. Globally, it competes with freelancer sites such as Freelancer, Fiverr and Dribbble.
