Two of Tanzania’s largest general marketplace sites, Roam-owned ZoomTanzania and Frontier Digital Ventures-backed Kupatana, have announced a merger that will see the competitors join forces to operate as one large marketplace.

Both platforms will henceforth be operated and marketed by Afrieuro Digital Ventures, which has received exclusive rights to the two classified sites.

According to Makusaro Tesha, GM of Afrieuro Digital Ventures, plans are under way for the launch of a new platform merging the two brands. It will maintain the name because of the high brand awareness and mobile adoption rate in Tanzania.

“This is an amazing opportunity for us, but particularly for Tanzanian internet users, since we will be able to further develop the already strong online marketplace presence and provide even more sales opportunities and a better user experience across all categories,” he said.

“From a technical standpoint, the new platform will be a new version that will combine the best of the two platforms, but also bring new and exciting features so that we can provide a safe, fast and user-friendly experience to buy and sell online.”

ZoomTanzania, which reportedly got a million dollar investment from Ringier Africa, currently has 87,000 listings, while Kupatana has 62,000. The sites average 500,000 visits each per month.
