General goods marketplace Mercari has appointed Naohisa Ichihara as its new chief information security officer.
In a hiring announcement, Mercari said Ichihara had been tasked in May with strengthening the security and privacy structures of the Japan-based marketplace, which also operates in the U.S. He joined the company from information service business Line Corp., a subsidiary of Z Holdings (formerly Yahoo Japan), where he had been working since 2015.
Prior to joining Line Corp., Ichihara (LinkedIn profile) spent more than two decades with NTT Data Corporation. He has a master’s in Artificial Intelligence from Tokyo University of Science.
“Mercari’s service represents unknown territory for me, in a domain completely different from my experience up until now. There’s also no right answer when it comes to building the world’s most secure c-to-c and b-to-c marketplace. That’s why, the way I see it, our future is so full of possibilities,” he was quoted as saying in the hiring announcement.
“Mercari still has plenty of room to grow, and the company is making a concerted effort toward global expansion. I realized that this was a place where I would have room to utilize my experience up until now while gaining new, exciting experience. This was why I decided to join Mercari.”
