Founded in July 2021, Berlin-based FairCado offers a second-hand shopping assistant — a browser extension powered by artificial intelligence (AI) — that provides consumers with information regarding second-hand alternatives to products they are searching for online. By so doing, the company aims to steer consumers towards options that are more sustainable.

In an interview with website EU-Startups, FairCado founder and CEO Evoléna de Wilde d’Estmael (LinkedIn profile) said that the market lacked a single solution that gathered all second-hand offers into a single location while shopping.

She added that FairCado’s goal was to employ technology to alter consumption habits and make secondhand the preferred option for customers in order to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

The startup currently collaborates with more than 50 marketplaces, including eBay, Vestiaire Collective, ReBuy, Refurbed, BackMarket and Vinokilo, and it recently launched an apparel category.

During 2022, the number of secondhand items integrated into FairCado’s platform rose from just 500 to ten million, including books, electronics, clothing, footwear and accessories, according to a recent LinkedIn post by de Wilde d’Estmael.
