Singapore-based marketplace horizontal Carousell says it has implemented new security measures in the light of a recent increase in phishing scams on the portal, augmenting its existing multi-layered defense. Moreover, it will soon require all users who opt for mailing and delivery to transact exclusively within its website.

According to Carousell, at least $1.9 million U.S. was lost due to phishing scams involving fake buyers on the website during 2022. A data breach on Oct 14 exposed the email addresses and phone numbers of some users.

“We will be tightening our policies to protect our users even further; in a few short months, we will require users who do not do meet-ups to make payment and delivery only via the Carousell platform for escrow protection. Trust and safety is a top priority for us, and we are committed to doing our best to keep users safe,” said Su Lin Tan, senior vice president of operations at Carousell.

Meanwhile, Kevin Huang (LinkedIn profile),  managing director of Carousell’s Hong Kong division, has left to join Hong Kong-based English-language newspaper The South China Morning Post (SCMP) as chief operating officer, overseeing its advertising and marketing solutions unit.

Huang left the marketplace after almost two years of driving business strategy, while also managing operations, marketing, branding and community engagement. In his new role at SCMP, he will be charged with fostering the company’s relationships with prospective and existing partners across industries.

“Building on The Post’s loyal following from a worldwide audience base, I also look forward to scaling the award-winning content studio and advancing the ad tech stack at SCMP as part of the Post’s full-suite marketing and branding solutions offering,” commented Huang.

Prior to joining Carousell, Huang was head of Hong Kong-based mobile phone network Birdie Mobile. In 2002, he co-founded digital advertising company Pixels.
