Japan-based marketplaces operator Mercari has established a team dedicated to generative AI and large language models (LLMs).

However, the company didn’t not disclose the size of this team.

“This team will be led by vice president of generative AI/LLM Yuki Ishikawa and will work with teams across the entire Mercari Group to enhance internal productivity and solve issues encountered by users of our products by applying generative AI/LLM technology,” Mercari said in a news release.

“This team will create an environment where these new technologies can be used both within the company and in our products and will aim to contribute to the disruptive growth of the company.”

“With the advent of generative AI and LLMs, we expect to see more innovation in a variety of fields moving forward, and we also see potential for many applications of this technology within Mercari Group.”

Mercari, which was founded in 2013 and launched in the U.S. the following year, recently introduced a ChatGPT-powered shopping assistant in the U.S., where it competes with Craigslist.org.

In Japan, Mercari has a clear edge in tech use over competitors Z Holdings (the operator of Yahoo AuctionsZozoUsed and PayPayFleaMarket) and Jmty.jp.
