South Africa-based used car marketplace Cars.co.za has appointed Amasi Mwela as managing director.
Prior to joining Cars.co.za, Mwela (LinkedIn profile) was CEO of PrivateProperty.co.za, one of the country’s leading real estate marketplaces. Before that, he was CEO of edtech company Fundi.
Mwela has a bachelor of commerce degree from Bond University and an MBA from Milpark Business School.
“Amasi is a proven leader with a wealth of experience in digital marketplaces. He has a deep understanding of the South African market and a passion for cars. I am confident that he will be a great asset to the company and help us to achieve our ambitious goals,” wrote company co-founder Ross Mcllroy in a hiring announcement.
Mwela described Cars.co.za as a leading automotive marketplace with “the best consumer-oriented motoring content in the country,” adding that “I believe that there is a huge opportunity to grow the business in South Africa, and I am committed to working with our industry partners to find more ways to empower the South African car buyer with all the information and tools they require to find their next car.”
Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Johannesburg, used car sellers can use Cars.co.za to either sell their vehicle online to its dealer network or privately with pay per listing.
It had an average of 4.7 million monthly visits over a recent three-month period, compared with a comparable figure of 8.5 million for leader AutoTrader.co.za.
