Japan-headquartered general marketplace Mercari has opened its first Global Centre of Excellence in the Indian city of Bengaluru (Bangalore).

According to a news release from the company, this office is part of Mercari’s strategy to double its workforce in the country. It adds that the Global Centre of Excellence will house about 40 employees and will be integral to Mercari’s operations.

“With our growing team of talented professionals in India, we are ideally positioned to drive technological breakthroughs and deliver exceptional experiences to our customers worldwide,” said Mercari CTO Ken Wakasa.

In May 2022, Mercari announced an expansion into India to bolster its tech team through local hiring.

The company’s revenue increased by 17% year on year to Y172 billion ($1.2 billion U.S.) during the 12 months to June 2023.
