Jonathan Smoke, chief economist for Cox Automotive, has been promoted as an SVP with an expanded role across sister company Cox Enterprises.

Smoke will lead “effort to develop and deploy economic, market and industry insights and data to help shape the strategic planning and management of all Cox businesses,” Cox Enterprises stated in an internal announcement shared with the AIM Group. 

“He will advise leaders across the enterprise on economic impacts to consumers and business clients, including providing deep expertise on the U.S. and global economy, and the labor, housing, and automotive transportation markets.”

Smoke has 28 years experience translating data and trends into actionable insights for businesses. With Cox Automotive since 2017, Smoke has tracked trends impacting wholesale and retail markets for vehicles, and he has delivered reports informed by proprietary data from the company’s various businesses, including its marketplaces Autotrader.com and KBB.com.

Prior to that, Smoke spent several years studying the housing industry. He was chief economist for Realtor.com from 2014 to 2017, and before that he worked in various research roles from 2009 to 2014 for Zonda Home (formerly Hanley Wood), ending his tenure as chief economist.

Previous employers in the residential sector have included MetroStudy, Beazer Homes and Lend Lease REI. From 2006 to 2009, he ran his own housing market research company, BlueSmoke, LLC.

One of Smoke’s first jobs, from 1992 to 1994, was as a reporter for the Austin Daily Record.

Smoke has an MBA from the Texas McCombs School of Business and an BA in economics and religious studies from Rhodes College.
