General marketplace Mercari Japan has introduced biometric and face-scan authentication for all log-ins to its app, which it says has more than 20 million users.

The company said this feature was introduced in response to feedback from customers who faced difficulty in re-registration when migrating between devices.

“Compared to phone number authentication, the new method has the advantage of not having to wait for an SMS to arrive and is less likely to fail because there is no need to input information, allowing you to use Mercari more smoothly,” the company said in a statement.

Based in Tokyo, Mercari also has offices in Fukuoka, Palo Alto in the U.S. and Bengaluru in India. The Marketplace division accounted for 63% of its revenue in Q1 FY2024.

In October last year, Mercari launched AI Assist for listing creation and providing buying assistance.
