“We’re implementing incredible new features, such as SafeDeal — which adds an e-commerce experience to Gumtree … and we have started to modernize the entire structure of the website and app — modernizing the very way we operate,” he wrote in a blog post.

Citing a user verification feature introduced in April last year, Badach added it had been well received and “is a critical step in us becoming the most trusted marketplace in South Africa.”

Badach assumed his current position last month. Previously, he was head of operations at Gumtree South Africa. He joined the company in September 2023, having worked for it as a contractor since July 2020.

Founded in 2004, Gumtree South Africa is the leading general marketplace in South Africa. Marketplace specialist Adevinta sold Gumtree SA to Impresa Capital in 2022.

Gumtree.co.za had 3.7 million visits in February, putting it well ahead of competitors AdsAfrica.co.za (2.2 million) and JunkMail.co.za (1.1 million), according to Similiarweb data.
