Germany-based luxury watch marketplace Chrono24 has launched a certification program for pre-owned timepieces to provide greater transparency for collectors.

The authentication program, aptly called “Certified”, is available for pieces worth more than €1,000 ($1,068 U.S.) from professional and private sellers. It includes an authenticity check of the watch, its box and its papers.

“With the launch of Chrono24 Certified, we are opening our next chapter. The world’s leading marketplace for luxury watches now offers the largest selection of certified watches on the planet. Built on the most transparent authentication service in the industry, customers now experience the final layer of security in buying luxury watches,” said CEO Dr. Carsten Keller.

The assessment can be carried out in two ways: a watch can be either examined by a vetted watchmaker contracted by Chrono24 prior to listing it at no charge to the buyer, or, if the watch is sold by a private seller, buyers can add in-house authentication for an additional fee of €199.

The resulting certificate details the piece’s condition, whether it has any aftermarket parts and if there is any difference from the listing. This service is now available throughout Europe, with plans to launch it in the U.S. this summer.

Founded in 2003, Chrono24 has offices in Karlsruhe, Berlin, New York, Miami, Tokyo and Hong Kong. According to the company, it hosts in excess of 3,000 dealers and 35,000 private sellers from more than 100 countries.
