Christian Gisy, a long-time executive at several marketplace companies, is the new CEO at OLX Group. He started Monday in Amsterdam, meeting with select employees; his appointment was announced today (April 18). .

Gisy is tasked with leading the strategy, growth and development of OLX Group’s operations in Europe and South Africa, including for brands such as OLX, Otomoto, StandVirtual, Property24 and AutoTrader.

He will report to Ervin Tu, interim CEO of technology investor Prosus, which owns OLX Group.

Although an external appointment, Gisy brings marketplace experience to his new role, having served as CFO of Scout24 Group, managing director of AutoScout24 Group and chairman of the advisory board at Avito, which was previously in the OLX Group portfolio.

Announcing the appointment, OLX Group said Gisy had “built a strong track record coupled with significant experience in delivering growth and value expansion at marketplace and e-commerce businesses.”

As well as focusing on business performance, profitability and growth, Gisy will ensure innovation continues to be core to OLX’s overarching strategy, said the company, citing tech developments, especially in AI and machine learning (ML), as driving innovation into the classifieds space and creating new market opportunities and customer standards.

“Christian’s experience as a CEO will bring important expertise and leadership to OLX Group as it continues to grow,” said Tu. “Christian also has a deep understanding of the classifieds sector and knows the group well from a previous advisory role.”

Gisy added that he was looking forward to “lead[ing] the business through its next phase of growth.”

He said, “OLX has fantastic talent, brands, data and technology — helping connect millions of people and businesses and enabling them to transact online. Added to that, OLX is using transformative technology, including AI, to bolster the circular economy, so we also have an important role to play in enabling a more sustainable future.”

Gisy replaces Lydia Paterson, who has been appointed operating partner, overseeing Prosus Classifieds portfolio investments outside Europe and South Africa, before she retires at the end of the year.

Paterson served as CEO for a year after nearly seven years as CFO.

Based in Amsterdam, OLX Group operates brands such as OLX, Otomoto, Otodom and Property24. Its sites display more than 73 million active listings each month, with more than 13 million users posting items for sale.

The news comes as fellow industry giant Schibsted Marketplaces is also looking for a new CEO, since Kristin Skogen Lund is poised to resign, and the board has started the recruitment process.

Names in the frame for CEO include EVP Nordic Marketplaces Christian Printzell Halvorsen, an experienced professional who has led his division since 2019. Another is former Finn boss Anders Skoe, now running Trade Me in New Zealand.
