Zug-based online marketplace Ricardo, which is owned by Zurich-based SMG Swiss Marketplace Group, has reached five million users after 25 years of operations.

“We are delighted to have reached this impressive milestone. It is all the more gratifying and motivating that some 1,000 users rediscover Ricardo every day and use the platform to give their used belongings a new lease of life and to look for that special something, which promotes the circular economy,” said managing director Francesco Vaas in a press release.

Founded in 1999, Ricardo reached a million users in 2006. Membership reached two million in 2011, three million in 2016 and four million in 2020.

According to the company, the marketplace is mostly used by people aged 31-45 (36% of all users), followed by the 46-60 age group (30%). People in the 18-30 and 61-75 groups each accounted for 15% of users, while 4% are over the age of 75. Most users live in the cantons of Zurich, Bern, Aargau, Vaud and St. Gallen.

In 2023, the number of users posting listings on Ricardo rose by 5.6% year on year, with 13.2 million items listed and 6.5 million sold. The number of buyers rose by 3% to 735,000, while the proportion of total volume sales accounted for by secondhand items reached 71%.
