U.K.-based fashion marketplace Depop has held an event in New York City showcasing a curated collection of secondhand fashion from six of its top sellers.

The event took place on 18 and 19 May as part of HypeBeast Flea New York, a weekend-long “celebration of New York’s creative community, with a curated market of more than 30 vendors.” As well as fashion, it featured design, printed matter, art, and food and beverage.

“Community-driven resale marketplace Depop and HypeBeast came together to celebrate NYC’s creative scene and spotlight the secondhand curated selections of Depop’s biggest sellers,” said HypeBeast.

More than 6,000 visitors had the opportunity to browse the collections, and the fashion marketplace also held giveaways of merchandise.

“Throughout the event, the sellers detailed their approach to sourcing secondhand fashion, the intricacies behind each preloved piece and their intentions going into the IRL event,” added HypeBeast.

“From Abigail Sciarra and Zach Moore of OnSeam to Julian Binder of 20xx, the vendors introduced their style identities and niche aesthetics to the notable attendees of HypeBeast Flea New York.”

This is not Depop’s first foray into real-life events.

In November last year, the U.K.-based fashion marketplace announced a series of pop-up shops across several British cities.

It formed a six-month partnership with retail pop-up provider Sook to host the events in “iconic” retail spaces, including Oxford Street in London, the Birmingham Bullring, Liverpool One and Edinburgh’s St. James Quarter.

The aim of these “immersive pop-ups” was to “… [encourage] more people to shop secondhand while reviving the high street for the Christmas Party season.”

Simon Beckerman founded London-headquartered Depop in 2011 as a social network for Pig magazine readers to purchase items from the publication; later realizing that users also wanted to sell items, he relaunched the app as a marketplace.

Depop has offices in New York and Manchester, with a staff of around 400 people. It has around 35 million registered users with up to 180,000 new listings added every day. In 2021, the company was taken over by Etsy.
