Carmaker Volkswagen Passenger Cars India is to rebrand its Das WeltAuto used car business as Volkswagen Certified Pre-Owned. Das WeltAuto was launched in India in 2012.

According to Car&Bike, the move is part of Volkswagen’s strategy to more closely align its used car business with local market conditions in India. This strategy includes extending the customer perception of trust and quality associated with new Volkswagen cars to the used cars business, the company maintains.

“It makes more sense from our point of view to at least communicate and project similar brand values across our new car business and used car business. That’s why we have taken a call this year to transition from Das WeltAuto, which is already a big brand in the used car market, to Volkswagen Certified Pre-Owned,” Volkswagen Passenger Cars India brand director Ashish Gupta noted.

Gupta hinted at similar rebranding exercises in other markets in which Das WeltAuto operates during the coming months.

In India, Das WeltAuto operates  a multi-brand, online-to-offline model, combining online search with 105 physical outlets for order fulfilment. Its certified cars go through a 154-checkpoint inspection and come with a warranties — as well as optional extended warranties — service packages, options for accessories and maintenance programmes.

The direct-selling model for used cars has gained traction in the wake of the pandemic. Marketplaces like Cars24, CarTrade, and CarDekho capitalized on this trend early by providing refurbished and certified cars, prompting carmakers like Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Kia and Porsche to follow suit.
